Royal Oak Guest House, Kirkwall, Orkney HMS Royal Oak
SCAPA FLOW - HMS ROYAL OAK The guesthouse gets its name from the HMS Royal Oak that
was sunk by a German U-boat in 1939. 833 men lost their lives in the
major naval tragedy, just six weeks into the Second World War. The guesthouse
overlooks Scapa Flow where the Dreadnought lies just five meters below
the surface and remains a significant part of Orkney's history. Oil traces
can be seen on the waters surface above the wreck, now an official war
grave to the men who lost their lives.
